At age 10, he kissed a fellow classmate, his best friend at the time. Said friend rejected him and beat him up, and he was further berated by his father for the act. Thus began his life as a closeted homosexual.

At age 18, he applied for acceptance to Sharlayan’s Studium but was denied by a narrow margin on his aptitude tests; his twin sister Yue was accepted and headed for Old Sharlayan. Defeated, Yu entered business school to become an accountant.

At age 19, he decided that if he was doomed to a life of false heterosexuality, he was at least going to lose his virginity to a man. In secret, he headed to Pearl Lane, where he met Delika Silka, a sex worker. Yu hired Del, but a nervous question about the business side of Del’s work sparked a conversation that ate Yu’s entire time slot. Grateful for Yu’s advice, Delika deflowered him, free of charge.

Delika and Yu ran into each other on many occasions in the following year, eventually forming an odd friendship.

21 year old Yuyunji stood just outside his family home, waiting for his parents for evacuation as fire rained down from above. One such fireball struck the house, the shock wave of which sent Yu flying, knocking him unconscious. His parents died instantly. Yu awoke much later after the event was over, under a pile of debris and disoriented but otherwise suffering only minor injuries. Taking in the wreckage of his home, he began to dig, hoping against hope he’d find his parents beneath the charred rubble.

Unable to find his parents, Yu set off to look for them in the wreckage of Ul’dah. The sight of the destruction and gravity of his situation left him in shock, so much so that he didn’t recognize Delika calling out to him until the other man grabbed him by the arm. Relieved to see one another, they embraced, and Del took Yunji in for a time to live with him and a female Raen, Tenko Musa, who was the same age as Yu. A motherly type, she took to Yu quickly, soothing him as he grieved.

A week later, Yu was digging in the rubble of his former home when his sister Yue arrived, returned from Old Sharlayan (for obvious reasons). She took the news of their parents’ deaths (assumed; their bodies were never found) poorly, and the two argued. In the heat of things, Yue exclaimed, “I wish you were the one that died!” The two went their separate ways, spending the next several years estranged.

In the ensuing years, Yuyunji, Delika, and Tenko formed The Wanderer's Paradise, a brothel in Ul'dah, with Yu as the head of finances. As business flourished, they expanded their enterprise into adult trade goods and literature, which eventually led to their current status as a global leader in trade of this nature.
